Ravenous Pigeon Digest

17.1.05

Today was the 10th anniversary of the big Kobe (Hanshin) earthquake. I thought there would be a lot of anniversary related stuff around, but actually it felt quite muted. There were a few special programs on TV, and a huge 1.17 created from candles in Sannomiya. There might have been a lot of other commemorative activies going on but I didn't see that much. So I walked around Kobe and tried to take a few pictures seeing as it turned out to be a nice day.

I did see a photo exhibition under JR Kobe station displaying photos from the various Kobe city wards and the damage that occurred in each. Its weird to see train stations and street junctions that I've come to know quite well completely destroyed by the earthquake - station platforms and motorway sections pancaked on top of each other.
