Recently I had the chance to see an exhibition of a real life notebook penned by the once real life Leonardo Da Vinci. As good as the museum collections are in Dublin, its pretty rare to have something like this on show and I even had to book tickets in advance. That kindly ol' codger Bill Gates lent it to the museum and the interest was such that you had to book tickets online despite the exhibition being free.
Unfortunatly the end result was less than overwhelming. I mean, I know its really old and he was a genius and all, but the way it was displayed didn't exactly lend itself to inspiration. Each page from the notebook was displayed between freestanding sheets of glass so you could see both sides of the text (and not, I guess, to read the backwards writing) but with only a short explanation about each page it was hard to appreciate the genius that went into it. That and the fact the each sheet was only illuminated for 30 seconds or so at a time before it would go dark, meaning you'd have to move on somewhere else.
