On to Austria and Innsbruck. The journey up into the mountains past lake Geneva was beautiful and we were really enjoying it until we were told by the conductor to get our asses back to second class. We had go part of the way by bus, and through what I'd guess is one of the longest tunnels in world which in itself was kind of class.
Innsbruck is nice. Just not nice enough, in the summer anyway, and especially when it continually rains, to spend two days there. The beer and schniztel was good though. What else can I say? We saw the majestic alps throught the clouds for about half an hour before the clouds came in again.
After a long two days we got the train to Vienna. Long day, stuck in a six seater compartment with four very senior citizens with airplane size legroom for the best part of five hours. We got rid of the alpine scenary quickly and after that it was fairy boring. Arriving tired into Vienna, we were hoping for sunny skies but nope.
We did the rounds of the big Hapsbourg buildings, sat in cafes (even Trotsky's favourite) ordering Viennese coffee and Sacher Torte and found a few of the locations from the Third Man including the doorway and of course the famous ferris wheel. Found Freud's old office building too, but at 5.30pm not much to see other than a big plastic sign.
Luckily the Vienna film festival happened to be on next to the Rathaus building. Lots of stalls serving cheap food from various countries, we were happy to go back there a few times (expecially to avoid having wiener sausage, dry bread rolls and mustard again).
