One of the first things I noticed when I got here was a chain of fast food outlets whose logo bore a striking resemblance to that of Burger King. "Hungry Jack's" has the same burger-shaped logo and colours, and also calls its big burger "Whopper". I would have thought it was just the Aussie brand name for Burger King, but I remembered seeing a photo in a guide book which had in the background a Burger King sign outside a Burger King window. So it turns out there's a little back-story..

According to Wikipedia (make of that what you will) when Burger King were going to set up shop here originally there was already a single Burger King shop somewhere that had the trademark. So the Australian franchise took another name that was already trademarked by the US parent (Hungry Jack). However, after a while the US parent got annoyed that enough branches weren't being setup fast enough, so they entered the Aussie market in their own right after the original Aussie trademark expired, this time as Burger King. So for a while there was a Burger King and Hungry Jack's.

Thereafter followed lots of court nastiness, which Hungry Jack's eventually won, and since then all the Burger King outlets have become Hungry Jack's and Burger King is no more.

So there you have it. In conclusion, having been there last night for the first time, their "nuggets" are nasty.
