For the first time since buying it back in April, my computer went a bit wobbly and then, after a couple of coughs, decided not to start at all. I'm pretty sure it started just after the computer tried to automatically download an updated for itself. Being that it's a Mac, I thought Windows would be the first to fall over but no, I found myself relying on it after that. Moreover, with Windows working I knew there wasn't anything physically wrong with the machine. So, armed with this knowledge I made an appointment at the "genius bar" in the Sydney Apple store, hoping they could use their genius and get it working without losing all those photos and mp3s and other crap I'd spent ages organising.
Well, the genius didn't even want to know what error message was getting or anything. He didn't even turn on the computer to see what happened. Pretty much immediately he plugged in some device, ran some utility thing to check that the disk wasn't faulty, and then asked if all my stuff was backed up because he wanted to do a clean reinstall of everything. What kind of useless help is that? I told him my backup had been stolen and that I also had windows on the machine - could I copy my stuff onto windows? Afraid not, came the reply. So I left and made another appointment for a few days later, presuming all my stuff was backed up.
Five minutes of searching on the internet found me a program where I could copy my stuff onto windows. Another bit of searching found me an option to keep all my old stuff during an install of Mac OS! The "genius" didn't even mention that!
So I backed up some stuff, chose the option to keep my old files and reinstalled Mac OS and now everything's working again.
