Just in time for the World Cup starting, the company decided to have a South African themed BBQ for lunch this week and set up a kicking competition in the courtyard behind the office. I imagined this was a chance to fire shots at the cardboard cutouts of management that had been in reception all week, dressed in football shirts and shorts. However it turned out to be a big wall with three holes to try and kick a ball through and a radar gun to measure your kicking speed. I'm pretty sure the last time I even touched a football was during the previous millenium so having signed on to a team of three with a couple of co-workers I was just going to concentrate on finishing the contest with some dignity intact, hopefully avoiding falling on my arse having spectacularly missed the ball.
Well whaddaya know, didn't I get two out of my three shots through the holes and, more importantly, got one through the hole near the top - maximum points! I won a replica football for my efforts and also our team won best overall because of it too. Later on there was an off-key band playing to an empty floor and awkwardly quiet staff standing in the corners sipping lite beers, worthy of the most cringing moments from an Office episode, but hey, I won a football!
