Ravenous Pigeon Digest

There was an article in the Guardian contrasting Japan's and China's present situations and having a poke at a perceived rise in Japanese nationalism.

I say perceived, because I don't think your average Joe Japanese guy really cares much about nationalism, and would like Koizumi to stop visiting Yasakuni shrine an' all that. What it might show is the complete disconnect between Japanese people and their political representatives. Anyway, interesting nonetheless..

Eh, I think that nationalism is very rampant. Remember the black trucks, blaring NIPPON, NIPPON!?

Anyway, look up Shintaro Ishihara - the present mayor of Tokyo. Read some of his comments and then realize that he`s one of the most popular ELECTED politicians in Japan. Prime-minister-in-waiting Shinzo Abe is also quite pro-Yasukuni, too.

Ahh..the black trucks :) I do remember them..waking me up in the morning with their feckin loudspeakers!! Of course anytime I asked a Japanese person to tell me what they were blaring about I'd always get an embarassed look and something along the lines of "its just political stuff.."
