When I first moved into this apartment, it looked and felt and was brand new. That was one of the main reasons I liked it – that and the cheap rent made me overlook the fact that it was situated in one of the worst parts of Dublin. We were one of the first apartments to have people move in and for a brief period – notwithstanding the ongoing construction – things were nice. Now though, in the space of less that a year, the place has become more than a bit of a kip.

Fresh chewing gum and spit appear on the ground everyday outside the lifts (not to mention bags of rubbish and the occasional man-turd), windows remain broken that should have been fixed 8 months ago.

Maybe becasue of the cheap rent, or the fact that Irish kids have waaay too much money now, students have moved into lots of apartments, as have young foreign workers no doubt not working in the mornings, and the midweek parties that go on until 3am might as well be in my bedroom for all the difference it would make to the noise. The balcony next to my bedroom allows all the smokers next door to gaze in as they wonder whether their volume of the euro dance on their stereo is loud enough.

It's a sad ole state of affairs that all the other new apartment buildings in the area have their ground floor windows boarded up. It’s nice to see the effort made to rejuvenate the area but depressing at the same time - young foreign workers moving into new apartments while locals register their approval by smashing all the ground floor windows

I probably sound jealous that I’m not being invited to all the parties, but I can’t help thinking that the reason for the newfound crappiness is just that no one gives a shit.
