Today I went back to the same cafe for breakfast and had their recommended noodle breakfast before getting the bus to Guilin for the day. Walked around the city which looked pretty modern and was, like Yangshuo, full of Chinese tourists.
With only the afternoon on my hands I took the guidebook blurb's recommendation and went to Seven Star Park (and its associated caves), one of the very first public parks in all China. It was a long walk across the Li River and into the park. Pretty feckin expensive, having to pay for the entrance and the cave admission separately. But when I did eventually find the caves they were fantastic. Of course the only previous cave I'd see was the underwhelming Aillwee one in Ireland. This place had huge chambers that went on and on into the mountain and eventually exited at the back of the park. Each were floodlit with different bizarre colours and the effect was really cool. Well work the admission thought I.
